|There is a college completion crisis in this country. More students that enter college leave with no degree than those that graduate with a degree. Additionally, there are significant disparities in completion rates along socioeconomic and racial lines. Further complicating the disparities in outcomes are disparities in who attends college at all and who successfully transfers and completes a degree. In Illinois, these disparities are equally stark and in some cases, more so than other states.
There is a clear need for greater engagement and public discourse on these long-standing challenges and the consequences of inaction. Additionally, there is a need for greater availability of and transparency in outcomes data to better understand the challenges and opportunities to improve completion rates overall and close persistent achievement gaps between groups. Elected officials, business leaders, policymakers, higher education leaders, K-12 systems, the nonprofit community, philanthropy, and students and their families are all needed at this table.
